In June 1977 the Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational Churches of Australia joined together to form the Uniting Church in Australia. Plans for this merger were first discussed early this century. In 1956 a commission was set up to draft the basis of union and in the early 1970s votes were held on this issue.
